The Whole Point – Ephesians 3:10 (NIV)
10 His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms,
This is a big one! So, from the previous verse, we see that Paul is to preach the Gospel. That the mystery (gospel and forgiveness of all) is to be made clear. Why? What’s the purpose? What is God’s intent?
"His intent was that now" – ok, we’re about to be told His intentions! His intent was that through the church (all believers in Jesus as the Savior Son of God) the great and expansive wisdom of God might be made known.
That all would see and understand the vast greatness of God.
At first glance, that could seem a bit egotistical. If it were a human, it likely would be. However, we’re not talking about a human. The tallest living human is just factually correct so say he is the tallest living human. If a person thinks that it is good to give to a certain charity and that person also happens to be the largest donor to that charity, he could make various claims about it.
Maybe he could say he did a good thing (as he could say about other donors). Maybe he could say he was the most generous depending on how you measure generosity: total donation or percentage based. There are various claims that could be made that could possibly be true.
But for God, we’re talking about the ultimate good. The definition of good. We don’t measure God to see if he’s good, we measure God to know good.
So for Him to celebrate greatness, He must celebrate Himself. To acknowledge goodness, He must acknowledge Himself. To make known perfection, He must promote knowledge of Himself.
That’s what the church is meant to do. That’s the whole point.
