I’m not a huge fan of this story – I read it when I was around 27 and just didn’t really “get it.” I somewhat assume it’s me since it’s a modern classic, but mostly it seems like rich people not getting their way.
Gatsby is ultimately a crook faking his way as a rich guy buying friends in the hopes that his “love” will pay attention. Um, be a man. I certainly don’t want to reward that w/ caring if he gets what he wants.
To say he did it for love is no help.
The movie looks good, well shot and mostly well acted. Luhrmann didn’t over do his style here, but to me, the story just isn’t that great.
